Collage

Self Assessment of my collage:
My collage had to include my name in lettering that was not printing, a fully covered page with no white spaces, at least 5 image cut outs, and it had to represent me.

Wire Sculpture
“Movement & Motion“
To create this wire sculpture I had to consider balance and movement. The goal was to create a piece out of wire and beads that balanced perfectly on a wooden block while allowing movement to occur. To achieve this I had to bend the wire in a way that allowed there to be a small point of contact of the wire on the block. At the same time I wanted there to be symmetry of the beads on either side of the sculpture. Although I would’ve liked to make a larger sculpture with more beads if I had more time, I think that less features made it easier to create a piece that had balance and motion in a limited amount of time.

Bundle Dye
“Natural Impressions”

For my first bundle dye project I used all natural materials to create the final piece. The background was a cotton fabric and all the dying materials came from nature. My plan was to go for a colour pallet of mostly reds, and greens with some pink and yellow mixed in. I tried to concentrate the majority of the materials in the centre of the fabric. To allow the natural dyes to bleed their colours the fabric was steamed and dried. As I unwrapped my finished product I was surprised to find that not much of the green eucalyptus I used came through as green. The pink was very vibrant and the orange and yellow mixed well with this colour. While the pattern I used when placing my materials turned out as expected, the colours were surprising. Even so, I was happy with the result that the colours and placement of materials produced. To me this artwork represents trying new things, experimentation and being able to sit with uncertainty in life and in art.
Collaboration Painting
“Collaboration and Colour”

This collaborative painting was created on canvas using acrylic paint and masking tape. The tape was used to divide the canvas into square sections, and create spaces where paint was both allowed and restricted. I chose a limited colour palette of pinks and browns, my classmate and I took turns painting sections. Initially I tried to have no expectations for this project but soon realized how challenging it can be to give up control and allow someone else to work on a piece that is your own. At first, this felt uncomfortable but as we worked the process became easier and exciting. I found it was fun to see what my partner would do next and what we could come up with together. Ultimately, this piece is about collaboration, adaptability and exploring new ideas in art.
