This week, I visited a Design Lab in the lower level of a local elementary school which is something I didn’t even know existed in SD5. It’s an amazing space where students can be creative, use technology, and learn through hands-on activities. The best part is that any school in SD5 can book time there, so all classes can benefit from this modern, technology focused learning space.

Design Lab Technologies

During the visit, we were introduced to several tools the lab has to offer to students and teachers. One cool feature I thought was interesting was Skoot, named for the South East Kootenay area, this is an AI chatbot the lab has created. Skoot acts as a planning partner for teachers, helping them brainstorm ways to bring technology and innovation into lessons across subjects. Skoot helps teachers think of new ways to incorporate tech into their lessons and connect their curriculum to hands on learning.

During our class, we were introduced to the Cricut machine, a digital cutter that can create shapes and lettering on paper or vinyl. With this tool, students can design cut out images and shapes for fun or classroom projects. I noticed it was surprisingly user friendly, although it did take a long time to cut the image into the paper.

One of the lower-tech tools we explored was the button maker. It’s simple, creative, and fun, students can design and press their own buttons in just a few easy steps. When paired with the Cricut machine, it becomes even more engaging. Students can create their own designs on the Cricut and then turn them into buttons they can wear or take home.

Out of everything we saw, my favorite tool was the Chomp Saw.
It’s a kid-friendly cardboard-cutting saw that makes cutting safe and fun for kids while also being super accessible. With it, students can safely cut through cardboard to build models, structures, or inventions.

Final Thoughts

Before this visit, I had no idea the SD5 school system had such a unique, fully equipped space dedicated to design, innovation, and technology. Now that I’ve seen it, I can absolutely picture myself taking full advantage of it when I have my own classroom. The possibilities for learning here are endless! The Design Lab is a place where students can imagine, build, experiment, and bring their ideas to life.
