I have always been interested in Indigenous art and the cultural traditions it represents. For this free inquiry project, I plan to explore First Nations, Inuit, and Métis art, looking closely at traditional art forms such as carving, weaving, beadwork, and painting. I will also investigate the symbolism and storytelling that exists in these works, as well as the contributions of specific Indigenous artists in Canada. Along the way, I want to consider how Indigenous art can be integrated into the classroom in meaningful ways. My goal is to gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of these artistic traditions while developing strategies to share them with students. This project will not only help me grow as a teacher but also inspire my future students to value diversity, creativity, and history through Indigenous art.

I’ve included this video below because it highlights the importance of authentic Indigenous art and the cultural knowledge it represents. It shows how traditions are passed down through art, how sharing these traditions strengthens communities, and how being proud of one’s culture and history supports identity and success especially for children. I was especially interested in idea that children who are proud of their culture and identity tend to do better in school, which connects directly to my interest in integrating Indigenous art into education. The video also points out that authentic Indigenous art not only preserves traditions but also provides meaningful support for Indigenous artists and communities.
